This year the Winter came in St Petersburg at late November. It is not usual: last years we had snow in late October. But that Fall was quite warm.

DIY country house project story
  New Articles:
Welcome to my DIY country house construction blog!

My name is Andrew and I am living in St.Petersburg, Russia. When I am not busy with my country house project, someone can see me working as a physician in a hospital. From time to time...

I have organized my construction DIY stories to incorporate the different aspects of the country home construction: house lot, house foundations questions, aerated concrete wall construction, my DIY ideas and real life experience, a collection of stories about my house...
I have a lot of stuff already published in Russian. So I will do the English edition step by step. And sorry for my "pidgin-English", folks))).

Browse the menu at the left to see what I did by myself and welcome to leave comments and questions!

The blogman - Andrew Dachnik*

*Dacha is a Russian seasonal ot year-round country house (second home). Dachnik - anyone who lives in a Dacha. That term usually refers to a whole distinctive lifestyle.

Well, what to say at the beginning... Yes I am building my country house. From the very beginning I managed all construction stages and was doing a lot of work myself. Even the home plan and project was completed by me myself with the help of the Floor Plan and the Arcon software + cardboard paper, scissors and glue.
I did not finished the home interior yet, but can tell you a lot about all previous home construction stages. Follow me and you will dig into all projects details, including numerous DIY money saving construction ideas. Sorry to tell you, but M.D. in Russia is not a guy who was born with a silver spoon in a mouth. The physician's salary in Russia is poor as the communism idea itself. So I tried to do my best to do maximum for minimum with my country house. I hope my experience will be useful for somebody.

My construction is located in the Northen climate close to
the British Columbia Northwest or to the Alaska Southwest climate zone.

The floating slab foundation
Most people are thinking that floating slabs can be used as a foundation only for sheds, car garages and other "small" constructions. But can we use the concrete slab as a foundation for the real "big" house? Look at the picture at the right: that cute castle, built by my buddy, got a concrete floating slab as a foundation. That slab is different from the typical construction: it is strongly reinforced through the body with two levels of rebar mesh. And it does not have frost footings. That slab "floats" in the soil diring the perods of freezing/defrosting. Want to know how we did it? The secret is a click away >>>

Installing a shower box
How to install a corner shower box? I bought a noname "Made in China" corner shower box with glass doors. The price was good and I liked the design. The only problem was the assembling manual. It was written in lacaonic language: #1 Assemble tray. #2 Assemble walls... So I had to work through the process of the corner shower assembling and installation myself. It took some time an dI made couple mistakes. So here is my step by step corner shower box installation photo manual.   installing a shower box

The Dome House
How to build a cheap and original Eco-friendly house? The geodesic Dome House is one of the ways to do it. You will save up to 30-40% comparing to the same floor size traditional box-house. Here are the photos how one guy in Russia did it: The DIY Dome House.   a dome house
