PPR pipes welding

We picked up Bänninger polypropylene (PP-R) pipes for residential cold and hot water system. Why do we use PPR pipes for plumbing? That water pipe type got a lot of advantages: long life duration, low thermal penetrability, chemical endurance, endurance in corrosion, mechanical resistance and elasticity, low friction internal surface, resistancy to high temperature, low bacterial growth. PPR pipes ensure 100% leak proof entire it's service lifetime. PPR pipes reduces the cost of handling, transportation and insatllation. And the most important issue: you can do the PP-R pipes installation youself using low-cost PPR pipes high temperature fusion welding mashine.
Propylene (PP) was first polymerized to a crystalline isotactic polymer by Giulio Natta as well as by the German chemist Karl Rehn in March 1954. The first commercial PP-R pipes appeared in Germany in 1959.Now polypropylene is the second most important plastic after Polyethylene (PE).

Bänninger PP-R (PP-RCT) pipes, manufactured from a special polypropylene random copolymer, are mainly used for transporting hot and cold drinking water and for heating systems. Pipes working pressure: For cold water at 20° C up to 20 bar. For warm water at 70° C up to 10 bar. For heating at 70° C up to 3 bar.   The mechanical strength of PP-R pipes can be further improved significantly by incorporating a glass fiber reinforced middle layer in multi-layer pipes. On the left side: glass fiber reinforced PP-R pipe with a layer thickness distribution of 25-50-25.Total pipe wall thikness is 3,5 mm. On thу right: cold water unenforced PP-R pipe with wall thikness 2,8 mm.

Cut PPR pipes to the required length by cutter.The shorter pipe part should be place at the right hand.   Mark the required insertion depth (welding depth) on the pipe with the help of suitable marker.

Thoroughly clean the end of the pipe and the socket of the fitting with alcohol and absorbent cloth. Mark the welding depth of the socket at the end of the pipe.   Before PPR pipes welding, be sure that your welding machine is in good working condition and there is no air gap between the welding socket tools and the welding machine.

The most common method for connecting PPR pipes and fittings is the socket thermo fusion welding. We use hand-held socket welding machines with pipe clamping for socket fusion at temperature 260 С.Connect the plug to the 220V power supply socket and wait until the red lamps went off - it will indicate the reaching of the working temperature. (260ºC±5ºC).Heat the pipe and fitting on the polyfusion device as per the recommended heating times.   It takes only a few seconds to make PPR pipes connection by fusion welding process. After a couple of minutes already, the welded joint cools down sufficiently and can be fully loaded.

Push the pipe and the fitting simultaneously into the heating tools of the corresponding size.   After specified heating time, remove the pipe and fitting out of the matrices. Heated end of pipe should be pushed in to the flared end of hot fitting down to the previously marked depth.

After the heating, pull out the pipe and the fitting and joint them immediately. Push the pipe without any rotation until it reaches the marked welding depth. During the jointing time the welded pipe and fitting have to remain fixed. The outer fusion seam must be inspected. After the joint is completely cooled, the connection is ready for use.   Do not turn or twist the pipe or fitting while pushing in to the matrices and pulling out of the matrices.

After the specified cooling time, the PPR pipes joint gets a first stiffness, after this phase next joint can be made   The quality of each installation system depends on the tightness, stability and lifetime of its connections. The homogeneous connection of PPR pipes by scoket fusion welding gives an absolutely safe pipe connection.

Demonstration: welding quality check through join cut.   The cut through pipe after properly made welded joint shows no mark of contact surface between two elements i.e. pipe and fitting in the entire volume of joint. Thus fusion process gives homogeneous, integral long lasting leak proof joints for life time.
